Mrs. Kim caught them there, it was hard to even seen Lane anymore. "Hey You," Dave said as he saw Lane walking up the path to meet him.
Lane smiled and said, "Hey."
"I've been waiting for you for like 5 minutes."
"Sorry, I was having a hard time getting past ---,"
"Let me guess, Mama Kim." Dave smiled and looked into Lane's eyes.
"You guessed it."
Lane frowned as Dave pecked her on the cheek. "What was that?"
Dave mirrored her _expression. "What do you mean?"
Lane raised an eyebrow, let out an impatient sigh. "That...that peck." She rolled her eyes. "You
aren't a chicken."
Dave laughed. "Afraid of your mom. Yes, I am."
Lane wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him to her. "I want a real kiss," she said, dragging his head down to hers as their lips met in a sweet kiss.
"Lane." Dave said as he wrapped his arms around her stomach.
"What?"
"I think we should tell your mother, even though I'm terrified of that woman."
"I don't think that's a good idea."
"Why not?"
"She needs to really like you first and right now, after what just happened last week. I don't think that time is now, or soon."
Dave sighed and smiled.
"I guess we should get going to practice, huh?"
"Yeah, but kiss me first."
Practice was a blur for Lane. She couldn't concentrate, and she missed her cue more than once.
She could tell the guys were starting to get annoyed. Sighing, she called for a break. Grabbing her water bottle, she went outside. She was surprised to find Rory across the street, saying bye to Jess. She waved her over. "I need to talk to you."
"What about?" Rory asked, sinking into her role as best friend easily, naturally.
"Dave."
"I shoulda saw that coming." Rory smiled slightly. "So..."
Lane nodded. "Right. Well...he wants to tell my mom about us, you know..."
Rory cocked her head to the side, and appeared to be thinking deeply. After a moment, she said, "I think he's right. She should know. Look at what happened with Henry."
Lane paused. Rory did have a point.
"I just don't want to lose him. My mother scares off everybody! She still doesn't completely like you!" Lane sighed.
"Doesn't mean that she keeps you from hanging out with me. Come on, Dave has totally won brownie points with her. He ate those aweful sandwiches, no offensive, he played guitar music-her songs- for 5 hours STRAIGHT. Nobody would do that if they weren't head over heels for you. I mean it."
"Thanks, Ror," Lane hugged her best friend and ran off to find Dave. She just had to figure out the best way to tell her mother about them. 'There's going to be an us! There is an us' she thought.
Dave knew something was bothering Lane. She wasn't like herself during practice. He knew the break would be good for her, he followed her outside but then saw her talking to Rory. Dave saw Lane coming back.
"Lane, are you okay?" He smiled.
"I will be. We should get back inside." Lane grabbed Dave's hand and took him back inside.
The band managed to get through the rest of the rehearsal with very few complications. Lane tried to focus on the music, but her mind kept wandering to how much she could pack to the Korean boarding school she was probably going to get sent to. The band wrapped up for the night and Lane made her way home.
"Mama? I have to talk to you about something...."
"Lane."
"Mama...Ya know that boy that played for you at Thanksgiving??"
"Oh that boy, boy that I caught you with at the tree."
"Yes, Mama. That boy."
"What about him?"
"Can we come over for dinner sometime?"
"How does toburgers sound?"
A huge grin spread across Lane's face. "Sounds perfect, Mama."
Mrs. Kim was not stupid. She saw the way the two of them looked at each other at Thanksgiving and after the whole incident with the other boy she didn't want to push her only daughter away. Especially since it was going to be her last year before college or university. Lane was thrilled that Mama agreed that Dave could come over but then again, she was sucipious of why Mama didn't put up more than a fight. Lane picked up the phone to call Dave but someone was already on the other end.
"Hello?"
"Lane, it's Rory."
"Wow, that was werid. I went to call Dave and I heard someone in the background."
"Yeah, that is werid. Listen, Jess and I were wondering if you and Dave wanted to go see a movie."
"Umm, well I'll bring the idea up when I call him."
"Okay, so what's new?"
"I just asked Mama if Dave could come over for dinner one night and she said yes."
"She said 'yes'?"
"Yes."
"Wow."
"I know."
"That's werid."
"Totally."
"Well I should go call Dave, you know how Mama is with the phone line."
"Okay, see you later."
Lane sighed and dialed Dave's number.
